Vermejo in Northern New Mexico is the largest of the 4 preserves, and at 550,000 acres it is as large as some national parks. Including the other reserves, they offer snowcapped alpine tundra, 19 fishable lakes, a wide variety of wildlife including elk, bison, wild horses, black bears, golden eagles, prairie dogs, bighorn sheep, mountain lions, and one of the largest populations of Mexican free-tail bats in the USA.
